SciShield FAQs
Do I need permission to log onto SciShield?
Anyone with an active NU account can use SciShield. Your training REQUIREMENTS, however, come from being a member of a lab/shop/safety group.
I am a new lab safety manager. Where can I find training about using SciShield?
Look for the “NEED HELP” button on your SciShield homepage. A comprehensive directory of guides can help you manage your group.
How do we keep our SciShield profile up to date?
Each group is required to (1) update hazards annually, (2) add and drop members at the start of the semester, and confirm them, and (3) check to assure that correct job activities are assigned.
I need to add a researcher to my group but I can’t find them in the directory.
One: the person just started today. It can take 24 hours for their information to enter the SciShield directory.
Two: The person has a sponsored account but didn’t check the box for a NU email when they set it up. They must have this to get into the system, so direct them to go back into their sponsored account and check this box.
Three: The person has both a NU staff/sponsored email address and a student email. If so, they MUST use their staff/sponsored account every time they log onto SciShield.
Four: The person has two NU IDs for some reason. This must get reconciled with NU ITS immediately. Our office cannot fix this.
Five: The person requested to be added to your lab group within SciShield, and their approval is pending. Check the “MEMBER” tab on your lab profile for their request.
How do I know which trainings to take?
Membership in a Lab, Shop or Studio group will automate your training requirements, which are based on the job activities in that group.
Help! Please take me off the list for training.
OARS doesn’t assign training. Membership in your group and the activities in that group is what assigned training. SPEAK WITH YOUR PI or Lab Manager regarding these job activities, or to be removed from a lab group. It is their responsibility to keep up-to-date member rosters and requirements.
I’m a new Principal Investigator. How do I create a lab profile?
OARS creates the draft profile; a set-up wizard will guide you through. Ask your DSO to arrange a session with OARS to train all new PIs in your department.
Can OARS help us with our door signs?
You are responsible for inputting the correct information. Once completed, OARS will print the sign for you. See the Door Sign-NFPA page.
Members of our lab are assigned training they don’t need.
Training requirements are triggered by job activity assignments. Go into your “Member Job Activities” tab and make sure the right people are assigned the right job activities.
A visiting scholar needs access to SciShield but and they won’t have a NU account. What are our options?
Under special circumstances, the OARS team can create a “TEMPORARY” SciShield account under a user’s personal email address. This is for short-term circumstances where a sponsored account is impractical/won’t be needed. Contact OARS to discuss your need, and review our Visiting Scholars and Students page.
