Hazardous Waste Listed and Characteristic Waste

Hazardous Wastes at Northeastern University are regulated according to regulations of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). In order to decide whether you have a hazardous waste, you must determine whether your waste has certain characteristics or appears on one of several lists. If it does, then you must manage it according to requirements identified in the fact sheet for Disposal of Hazardous Waste. If waste you have does not meet this criteria and is not a hazardous waste, please confirm with our office whether it is appropriate to dispose of your waste down the sink or regular trash. Although some waste you generate may not be a hazardous waste, it still may be necessary to manage it this way to prevent adverse effects to health, safety or the environment.

1. Ignitable-D001

A waste exhibits the characteristic of ignitability if the waste exhists in the following forms:

        • an oxidizer, such as permanganate, inorganic peroxide, or nitrate, that readily stimulates combustion of organic materials.
          • a liquid,other than an aqueous solution containing less than 24 percent alcohol by volume, with a flash point below 60o(140oF);
          • a non-liquid, which under standard conditions is capable of causing fire through friction, absorption of moisture, or spontaneous chemical changes and, when ignited, burns in a manner that creates a hazard
          • an ignitable compressed gas, which includes gases that form flammable mixtures at a concentration of 13 percent or less in air; or
2. Corrosives-D002

A waste exhibits the characteristic of corrosivity if the waste:

    • it is aqueous and has a pH less than or equal to 2 or greater than or equal to 12.5, as determined by a pH meter using Method 9040C in “Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods,” EPA Publication SW-846, as incorporated by reference in §260.11 of this chapter;
    • it is a liquid and corrodes steel (SAE 1020) at a rate greater than 6.35 mm (0.250 inch) per year at a test temperature of 55 °C (130 °F) as determined by Method 1110A in “Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste, Physical/Chemical Methods,” EPA Publication SW-846, and as incorporated by reference in §260.11 of this chapter;
    • a solid waste that exhibits the characteristic of corrosivity has the EPA Hazardous Waste Number of D002;
3. Reactive-D003

A waste exhibits the characteristics of reactivity if the waste:

      • is normally unstable and readily undergoes violent change without detonation;
      • reacts violently with water;
      • forms potentially explosive mixtures with water;
      • generates, when mixed with water, toxic gases, vapors, or fumes in a quantity sufficient to present a danger
      • is a cyanide or sulfide bearing waste that generates toxic gases, vapors, or fumes at a pH between 2 and 12.5;
      • is capable of detonation or explosive reaction when subject to a strong initiating source or if heated in confinement;

      • is an explosive, as defined in 49 CFR Sections 173.51, 173.53 or 173.88
4. Toxicity-See “D”List (TCPL)

A waste exhibits the characteristic of toxicity when EPA-defined test procedures indicate that an extract derived from the waste contains certain toxicants. The toxicants to be tested for are:
