Welcome (back) to campus!
Whether you’re stepping into the lab for the first time or returning after a well-earned break, now’s the perfect time to refocus on safety.
A clean, compliant, and organized lab isn’t just good science; it’s a safer, more productive space for everyone.
New to Northeastern?
We’re so glad you’re here!
Before you dive into research, connect with your Principal Investigator (PI) or lab manager to make sure you are set up for success. They’ll help you get oriented with:
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
- Lab layout, safety equipment, and emergency procedures
- Safe lab practices and expectations
Here is what you’ll need to do before starting any lab work:
- Complete your SciShield trainings: Once you are added to your lab group, you should be automatically assigned the required training. Log into your SciShield homepage and complete them ASAP!
- Find your emergency equipment: Know the locations of eyewashes, safety showers, fire extinguishers, exits, and emergency contacts.
Ask questions! If you are unsure how to handle a chemical or piece of equipment, please speak up!
For Returning Lab Members
- Finish Your SciShield Training
Even if you’ve taken training before, new assignments or refreshers may appear based on your updated role of lab hazards.
- Clean Up Your Space & Equipment
- Clear clutter from benches and walkways
- Check that safety showers and eyewash stations are unobstructed; flush eyewashes for 30 seconds (trust us, you don’t want to skip this: watch the video to learn why ).
- Verify that chemical fume hoods and biosafety cabinets are certified and ready for use; notify OARS if tags are expired.
For PIs & Lab Managers
- Provide Onsite Orientation
Make sure all lab members understand emergency procedures and know their way around the lab. Offer hands-on training for all relevant procedures and equipment to build confidence and promote safe practices from day one. (Hint: stay tuned for a new lab safety orientation checklist on our website soon.)
2. Review & Update Chemical Inventory
- Safely dispose of expired or unused chemicals
- Inspect containers for damage and confirm labels are accurate
- Double-check chemical segregation for compliance
- Update the lab hazards and chemical inventory in SciShield
3. Update SOPs & Lab Members
- Add new members to your SciShield roster and assign correct job activities ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3jN06fa9RU)
- Remove members who’ve left (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQg1IxpY53E)
- Revisit and update your SOPs, especially if procedures or equipment have changed
4. Refresh Door Signs & Emergency Contacts
- Ensure all lab door signs are visible, correct, and include current emergency contact information
- Replace faded or outdated signage
Final Note
Fall is a fresh start! Let’s make it a safe one. By staying proactive and looking out for each other, we can keep our labs healthy, productive, and welcoming for all.
